What a top month July has been!!! I have never known such wind and have been windsurfing 16 times from 5 stars at Point Clear to 1 star at Felixstowe and everything in-between!!! I have had max speeds of 25.83 – 35.72 – 25.89 – 31.52 – 29.13 – 25.42 – 24.02 – 29.41 – 25.97 – 26.96 – 20.65 – 23.55 – 24.57 – 19.12 – 21.20 and 27.11 knots and have covered 486 km!!!
The forecast was a good westerly breeze in the morning with sunshine so I left Felixstowe at 9 and headed to Levington where the tide was perfect an hour or so off high water :) It looked too light and gusty for a shortboard so rigged big and was on the water around 10, heading down to the bay in search for the best gusts! I had some good runs down the River Orwell towards Felixstowe docks, tacking near the huge container ships! There were loads of boats out mainly heading out to sea with yachts from The Netherlands and Germany, also several large motor cruisers and I had great fun sailing past them all!!! You could sail broad down river with the track at the back and then tack put the plate down, track forward and beat back. I then decided to beat the 3 miles up to Pin Mill in the beating straps with the board railed right up!!! The tide had now turned as was going out and I couldn’t clear its mooring rope and got a bit tangled up but lucky for me I didn’t break anything! I then had some nice reaches all the way back to Levington bay including some nice longboard gybes :) Then I had a few more runs down river getting my 2 best runs of the day – 24 and 25 kts :) The wind had eased off by now and the sun had been replaced by could and I had been on the water nearly 4 hours!!! and was getting hungry so headed back to the van to back up and have a snack! So another top longboard session, good day for birds too, spotting a Marsh Harrier on my journey to the marina, also diving terns just overhead and loads of geese flying low along the river – just a great day to be alive :)
